Clankers & Beasties

Forget World War I as you know it, because with Darwin's discovery of "life chains," the Allied Powers boast an army of terrifying genetically-altered beasties that challenge the steampunk and diesel-driven war machines of the Central Powers. Shortly following the assassination of the Archduke of Austria Hungary, the contested heir to the throne, Aleksander Hapsburg, is forced to flee his lavish country home to live as a refugee and enemy of all sides. On the other side of the front, young Deryn, a girl under the guise of a teenage boy, joins the British Air Service for—not to fight but to fly to the heights her own father had flown...the pair of protagonists meet in what seems to be the eye of the storm, yet they seem forever divided by the worldviews and prejudices of the forces they represent. Stranded in a frozen valley while war rages around them, our two heroes will come to find that their differences may not lead them to ruin but to a way to end the catastrophic war that threatens the world as they know it.

Two imperial forces meet, one built with steam and the other built with DNA, producing rich, vivid descriptions of the technologies that divide a continent.

Westerfeld's imagery is enhanced by Keith Thompson's old-fashioned black-and-white illustrations, which lend an extra dimension of reality to this world. And the Darwinist and Clanker jargon crackles with an authentically techie feel.
